CertainTeed Shingle Prices Rose Up to 8% on April 15: What DFW Homeowners Should Do This Month

By Landry Haight, Commercial Roofing Specialist

CertainTeed raised residential shingle and accessory pricing up to 8 percent effective April 15, 2026, following parallel 5-8 percent hikes from GAF and Atlas Roofing. The cause: Section 232 tariffs restructured to 50 percent on April 6, aluminum PPI up 34.1 percent year-over-year, and steel mill products up 15.4 percent. For a typical Dallas-Fort Worth 2,500 sq ft replacement, the pass-through is real dollars.

How much does an 8% shingle price hike actually add to a DFW roof?

JRH 2026 DFW replacement cost baseline runs $8,500 to $18,000 for a 2,500 sq ft asphalt shingle roof, with most mid-range architectural jobs landing between $11,000 and $14,000. Shingles and accessories represent roughly 35-45 percent of a replacement total. On a $12,000 job, an 8 percent manufacturer pass-through on shingles alone equals $336 to $432 in direct material cost. Factor in underlayment and accessory products hit by the same increase, and the all-in delta lands between $450 and $700.

Why did CertainTeed hike now?

The April 15 increase is the surface. The cause is the April 6, 2026 Section 232 restructure. On April 2 the administration issued a proclamation resetting steel and aluminum tariffs to 50 percent on metal articles, 25 percent on metal-heavy derivatives, and a transitional 15 percent through 2027 for industrial equipment. The tariffs now apply to full customs value, not just metal content. Aluminum mill shapes are up 34.1 percent year-over-year, steel mill products up 15.4 percent, copper and brass up 21.3 percent per AGC data.

What happens to DFW roof replacement costs over the next 90 days?

Distribution lag is 30-60 days. Elite Roofing Supply and Cameron Ashley, the primary DFW distributors, typically carry 4-8 weeks of pre-increase inventory. Contractors who bought ahead can honor pre-April-15 quotes on current work. New quotes issued from mid-May forward will reflect the full 8 percent pass-through plus any secondary increases. Hail season compounds the pressure. Quote volume spikes 3-5x in May.

Should I lock my DFW roof project now or wait?

Lock now if: roof is 18+ years old, visible granule loss, pending insurance claim, or you have had one inspection noting functional damage. Every 30 days of delay in a rising-material environment costs approximately 2-3 percent on total project price once storm demand kicks in. Wait only if: roof is under 10 years old with no active leaks, you are between carriers on insurance, or you are deferring a cosmetic replacement on a fully-functional roof.

Does upgrading to Class 4 impact-resistant shingles offset the tariff hike?

Class 4 impact-resistant shingles cost 10-20 percent more than standard architectural. Every major Texas home insurer (State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, USAA, Texas Farm Bureau) offers a Class 4 discount of 15-35 percent on the wind/hail portion. On a $2,400/year policy with $1,800 attributable to wind/hail, a 25 percent discount returns $450/year. The Class 4 upgrade pays itself back in 3-6 years, then continues returning for the roof 30-year life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did every shingle manufacturer raise prices on April 15?+
CertainTeed, GAF, and Atlas Roofing each announced 5-8 percent increases effective April 15, 2026. Owens Corning and Tamko moved on similar timing. The entire residential asphalt category repriced within a two-week window, with CertainTeed at the top of the range at up to 8 percent.
How long until the new prices show up at the distributor?+
Elite Roofing Supply and Cameron Ashley typically carry 4-8 weeks of inventory at pre-increase pricing. Most DFW contractors will be quoting at full new pricing by late May 2026. Quotes issued before then may or may not reflect the increase depending on the contractor supplier agreements.
Can I lock a quote at current pricing before prices fully flow through?+
Yes, with a material-secured contract. JRH holds pricing for 30 days on signed agreements where we have placed the material purchase order. Verbal quotes and unsigned proposals do not lock pricing.
Will insurance claim payouts increase to match the new material costs?+
Yes, on a lag. Insurance replacement cost value (RCV) updates quarterly via Xactimate price lists. The April 15 manufacturer increases will appear in the Q3 2026 Xactimate update. Claims filed now reference current RCV; claims settled in Q4 will reference updated figures.
Are there any shingle categories that did not increase?+
No residential asphalt category was exempt. Commercial TPO and PVC membranes were not part of this specific announcement but are subject to the same Section 232 tariff pressure on accessory metals (fasteners, drip edge, termination bars).
Is this price increase permanent?+
Tariff-driven increases have not reversed historically. The 2018 Section 232 steel tariffs remained in effect through multiple administrations. Assume the April 15 prices are the new baseline, not a temporary peak.
