Roof Warranty Comparison: GAF vs Owens Corning vs CertainTeed (2026)

Side-by-side comparison of the three major shingle warranties in Texas. Coverage, exclusions, transferability, and which one actually pays when you file a claim. From a GAF Master Elite contractor.

The Three Major Warranty Tiers

Here's the thing most homeowners don't figure out until they're filing a claim: all three manufacturers offer standard, enhanced, and premium warranty levels — and the difference between those tiers is what actually gets paid when something goes wrong. Standard warranties cover materials only, and they prorate after 10 years. That means on year 15, they're paying maybe 40 cents on the dollar. Enhanced warranties add labor for 10–25 years. Premium warranties — only available through certified contractors like JRH — cover everything non-prorated for 25–50 years with no dollar cap.

We see homeowners get burned by this constantly. Guy puts on a $7,000 roof with a standard warranty. Two years later a defective batch of shingles starts cupping. He calls the manufacturer, and they tell him the warranty pays a prorated portion based on remaining useful life — which comes out to maybe $1,200. Meanwhile the contractor who installed it has moved to another state. That situation doesn't happen with Golden Pledge or Platinum Protection installed by a certified contractor. That's the whole point.

GAF Golden Pledge (Best Overall)

GAF Golden Pledge is only available through GAF Master Elite contractors — and that's the top 2% of roofers in the country. Not 20%. Two percent. Joel takes that certification seriously, which is why we keep it current. The warranty itself gives you 50-year non-prorated material coverage and 25-year workmanship coverage including labor. So if the installation causes a problem eight years from now, GAF pays — not us chasing down a subcontractor.

GAF also has a WindProven warranty that runs 15 years with no wind speed limit at all when you meet the installation requirements. That matters here. DFW gets 60+ mph straight-line winds through the I-35 corridor every spring. Standard wind warranties cap at 110 or 130 mph — WindProven has no ceiling. JRH is Master Elite certified and we offer this on every qualifying installation in the metroplex.

Owens Corning Platinum Protection

Owens Corning's top tier is only available through Platinum Preferred contractors. You get lifetime material coverage that's non-prorated for the first 10 years, 25-year workmanship coverage including labor, and a separate 15-year TRU PROtection labor-only period layered in. Honestly, it's not that far behind GAF Golden Pledge. Different structure, comparable protection.

A lot of homeowners in Frisco, McKinney, and Wylie specifically ask for Owens Corning Duration Storm because of the Class 4 impact rating. And that's a smart call for the hail we get in DFW — 2–4 significant hail events per year on average. If you want Duration Storm, Platinum Protection is the warranty that goes with it, and it's solid coverage.

CertainTeed SureStart PLUS

CertainTeed's top-tier warranty is SureStart PLUS, available through SELECT ShingleMaster contractors. It covers materials and labor non-prorated for up to 25 years on qualifying systems. Their higher coverage levels also include a 10-year algae warranty, which matters if you're on a north-facing slope in the wooded parts of Colleyville or Grapevine where algae staining starts showing up 3–4 years in.

The maximum term is shorter than GAF or Owens Corning at the top end. But if you're committed to CertainTeed products — Landmark PRO or Grand Manor in particular — SureStart PLUS is still real warranty coverage, not the baseline paper most contractors leave you with.

Which Warranty Actually Pays?

Look, the warranty document doesn't mean anything if the claims process is built to reject you. In our experience working with all three manufacturers across DFW, GAF has the most straightforward process and the clearest documentation requirements. We've navigated claims with all three and the GAF system just moves faster.

But here's what most guys won't tell you: all three manufacturers require proof of certified contractor installation before they'll approve anything. The warranty is voided if you hired a non-certified contractor — doesn't matter what brand of shingle is on the roof. We had a homeowner call us out of Garland who had GAF shingles installed by a storm chaser after the 2023 hail event. Two years later those shingles started failing. He called GAF, they pulled the records, found the installer wasn't certified, and denied the claim. Every cent. We had to work with his insurance to get it covered instead.

The installer matters more than the manufacturer. A Golden Pledge from a certified contractor beats a “Golden Pledge” from an uncertified one — because the second one doesn't exist. JRH is certified by all three manufacturers. We can offer you the top tier from whichever company fits your project, and we handle all the registration and transfer documentation.
