Roof Underlayment

Roof underlayment is a water-resistant or waterproof barrier installed directly on the roof deck beneath shingles or other roofing materials.

There are three types of underlayment used in DFW: felt (15 or 30 lb asphalt-saturated), synthetic (woven polypropylene), and self-adhering ice and water shield. Synthetic underlayment has largely replaced felt in DFW because it is lighter, stronger, and does not tear in high winds during installation. Ice and water shield is required in valleys, around penetrations, and at eaves. JRH Construction uses GAF FeltBuster or Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment on all residential projects.
